Curing misbehaviour

By Dr Bill Maier Want to know how your children act at school? Just watch how they act at home! No parent wants to think their kids are causing a problem in school, but how they act at home is a pretty good indicator of how they act outside. If you’re concerned about your kids’ behaviour, spend some time talking to their teacher. You might even want to show up at school and observe them from a distance, like during recess, or a class field trip. Take time to get an honest assessment of your kids’ action when you’re not around. If you find that your child is misbehaving in school, step in and do something about it. Set clear consequences for misbehaviour – and then enforce them. Let them know that you plan to stay in touch with their teacher every day until their behaviour improves. Your child may not appreciate your approach or even like you for a while. But you’ll be doing everybody a favour, especially your child. This article was featured in Today November 30, 2009.
