‘Boyfriend Jackets’ Make Comeback
Normally it is men who wear jackets that accentuate big shoulders and chest and come down to cover the hips. But the fashion industry has now embraced the style for women. The “boyfriend jacket” is cropping up in the work of designers such as Dries Van Noten, Donna Karan and Stella McCartney this season.
“Due to the influence of 80′s retro style, clothes that are large and can cover the bodyline have been very popular. That’s the reason why brands are launching styles that make women look as if they were wearing their boyfriend’s clothes,” said designer Son Jung-wan.
But beware of blindly following the trend. Because boyfriend jackets have a loose fit and accentuate the shoulders, they can make the legs look shorter or the overall look can be awkward. Jeong Hye-young, head designer at Mogg, said, “Because a boyfriend jacket is different from conventional jackets in that it is not formal, it looks nice if you wear it as if you are wearing a large T-shirt by rolling up sleeves. Or you can match it up with a T-shirt and leggings for a layered look.” She added since the jacket represents masculinity, it is best to match it with feminine items such as a chiffon blouse or mini dress for a sophisticated look.
