Grammy Awards 2010: The red carpet

Beyoncé Knowles, who scooped six awards at this years Grammy Awards, entertained in an array of show-stopping outfits. Working the red carpet in an Haute Couture creation by Cheryl Cole’s favourite, Stéphane Rolland, she changed into little black cut-out leather dress courtesy of Versace Atelier, to perform on stage. To accept her award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, an intricate Armani Privé minidress, encrusted with Swarovski crystals, ensured she had the extra-factor.

Ever the reliable eccentric, Lady Gaga did not disappoint as she too swapped wardrobes and hairstyles as often as reapplying her lipstick. With a wardrobe designed exclusively by Giorgio Armani, the pop sensation shone in an array of out-of-this world, crystal-embellished designs from the Haute Couture Privé label.

Rihanna embraced her softer side to walk down the red carpet. A pretty, pastel-hued, tulle dress by Viktor & Rolf was contrasted with a floor-sweeping, crepe gown, featuring stone and feather detailing around the bodice, by Elie Saab Haute Couture from the autumn/winter 2009/10 collection. A move away from her fierce, leather-clad ensembles, she looked as though butter wouldn’t melt.

Katy Perry meanwhile, played it very safe in nude, embellished, carpet-sweeping evening gowns. On the left she wore a design from Zac Posen’s spring/summer 2010 collection. We can’t deny that we were a little disappointed by her shrinking-violet fashion choices this time.

Taylor Swift, with a penchant for all things bright and shimmery, kept her look elegantly simple. A silver sequin dress from the Collette Dinnigan archive, was later swapped for a navy blue Kaufman Franco design.

Short and sweet was the look favoured by Fergie and Heidi Klum, who opted for Emilio Pucci, as well as teen dream Miley Cyrus in Hervé Léger by Max Azria. They all accessorised their thigh-skimming creations with tanned and toned never-ending pins.

In contrast to the pastels and zingy brights favoured by most, black was made to look positively redundant. However, top marks went to Nicole Kidman, who made a satin high-halter neck gown with jet crystal detailing by Prada her own, and Ciara, who wore an Haute Couture gown by Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy, less than a week after it had made its debut on the catwalk in Paris.

Jennifer Lopez may have been teasing onlookers with this clingy creation by Versace, but we weren’t convinced. Keri Hilson was more successful as she flew the flag for Dolce & Gabbana in a strapless, nude rouched gown with a fishtail finish, accompanied by a jewelled belt.

Sadly, a few ill-advised frock choices were evident. Pink it seems, decided to match her hair colour to a gown by Tony Ward Haute Couture. We salute the bright quality of Mary J. Blige’s Gucci body-conscious dress, but are less convinced with its neckline. And Kesha, with her beaded, flapper-style dress, resembled a sea of gold.

Kristen Bell and Jennifer Hudson demonstrated how not to wear black.
