Helping kids move
Moving can be tough on kids, but there's a lot you can do to soften the blow.
Today's mobile society is requiring more and more families to uproot and make a move. Author Susan Miller has some good suggestions for parents trying to make the transition easier.
First, don't play down the trauma your kids are going through. Simply telling them that everything will be fine doesn't help - and makes them feel like you really don't understand.
Second, encourage them to talk about their concerns and fears. Teens are especially prone to keeping their feelings to themselves.
Finally, don't feel like you have to defend your reasons for moving. Children need to understand they're part of a family, and that parents have the family's interest in mind.
Remember, moving is tough, but with a little common sense and sensitivity, it can be an exciting change for the whole family.
