Here's how to make the most of Britain's winter wonderland

By Dan Newling It is devilishly good at blocking roads, slowing trains and spreading general mayhem. But, as these pictures show, sometimes snow is simply heavenly. Those who were lucky enough to escape the worst effects of the big freeze yesterday had the time of their lives. In between sledging down hills, throwing snowballs and kicking up their heels, they managed to build an army of snowmen.

One garden in Manchester sprouted an elegant snow angel while a pair of icy twins who popped up on the street looked alarmingly like X Factor contestants John and Edward Grimes.

Some got more air than others - paying for it with a heavy landing Even those who did report for work were able to join in the fun - as a couple of ruddy-cheeked policemen demonstrated. They posed for photos with some youngsters before throwing caution to the wind and sliding downhill on their shields - all in the name of keeping a responsible eye on things of course.
