Phones here not SIM-locked
IF YOU buy handphones from local mobile service providers, they are generally not SIM-locked.
The three operators, SingTel, StarHub and M1, told The New Paper that these handphones can be used with a SIM card from any operator, including those from overseas.
An IDA spokesman confirmed it too.
He explained that the rule was to ‘remove a barrier for users to switch operators and to allow users the freedom to choose among the operators offering various innovative and competitive mobile services’.
Mr Buchari said he was also told that he had to pay for registration of the Internet connection on the handphone.
The M1 spokesman said registration for Internet connection is equivalent to applying for a new phone line in the form of a mobile voice plan or data plan.
A Nokia spokesman said their recommended selling price for the E71 was $688 without a contract.
A check showed that the three operators are selling the phone at between $618 and $798 without a contract.
