The selection of a national flower was part of our overall effort in fostering national pride and a sense of identity. Vanda Miss Joaquim was chosen as Singapore’s national flower from among 40 other flowers, including 30 orchids.
Vanda Miss Joaquim was chosen as Singapore’s national flower in 1981. It is a natural hybrid from a cross between Vanda teres and Vanda hookeriana. It was discovered by Ms Agnes Joaquim in her garden in 1893 and was the first registered plant hybrid from Singapore.

It was selected particularly because of its hardy and resilient qualities and its ability to bloom throughout the year. These are characters which reflect Singapore’s quest for progress and excellence in all aspects of life.

Singapore Changi Airport commemorates the nation’s 44th National Day (9 August 2009) with lush display of its national flower, Vanda Miss Joaquim.
