BOSTON (Reuters) - Allergan Inc, the maker of Botox, said on Friday that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved its eyelash-thickening drug Latisse.
Latisse is designed to treat a condition known as hypotrichosis of the eyelashes, which means a person does not have enough eyelashes.
The active ingredient in Latisse is bimatroprost, the same ingredient that is in Allergan’s glaucoma treatment Lumigan. Patients taking Lumigan found a side effect of the drug to be eyelash growth, prompting Allergan to study it for the new use.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Older adults might want to take an interest in their grandchildren’s’ video games, if early research on the brain benefits of gaming is correct.
In a study of 40 adults in their 60s and 70s, researchers found that those who learned to play a strategy-heavy video game improved their scores on a number of tests of cognitive function.
Men and women who trained in the game for about a month showed gains in tests of memory, reasoning and the ability to “multi-task.”
The findings suggest that video games that keep players “on their toes” might help older adults keep their brains sharp, the researchers report in the journal Psychology and Aging.

ZURICH (Reuters) - The fairy tale tram rattles along Bahnhofstrasse, Zurich’s posh shopping street, beneath the twinkling Christmas lights as if this was just any other year.
Inside the tram, children listen to tales of Santa Claus, outside their parents rush from shop to shop, loaded with bags, ignoring the tales of global economic doom and gloom.
Retailers are rejoicing about record sales and a table in restaurants is as hard to get as a hotel room in ski resorts.

BEIJING (Reuters) - China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman said he would be watching out for journalists taking off their shoes in news conferences after an Iraqi reporter threw a pair at outgoing U.S. President George W. Bush in Baghdad.
Liu Jianchao was asked what he thought of Sunday’s incident, when the television journalist also called the American leader a “dog,” and replied all leaders deserved respect.
“I believe we should have basic respect for the leader of a country,” he told a media briefing, before adding that the attack had given him pause for thought.
