Travel 101 ... Sapporo
How to spend S$101 (you big spender, you) in a day
While visitors tend to flock to Hokkaido's largest city during the winter months, summer is actually a fantastic time to visit this beer-guzzling, ramen-slurping, listening metropolis. There's the annual tradition of Sapporo Festival in June, as outdoor beer gardens pop up across the city when the heat hits. Jazz lovers might also want to book their tickets to the Sapporo City Jazz event which runs from July to August. SERENE LIM
Visit to Moerenuma Park: S$0
Designed by renowned sculptor Isamu Noguchi who declared that "this whole park is a sculpture", Moerenuma Park is a wonderland where cutting-edge art meets nature. Summer is super for enjoying attractions such as the Tetra Mound where steel sculptures sit atop a hill, the unusual Moere Beach, the Glass Pyramid with cool exhibitions and cafes, and climbing Mount Moere to get a view of the city. Entrance is free.
Lunch at Sapporo Beer Museum: S$83.50
It'll be a travesty to miss out on one of Sapporo's finest produce. The only beer museum in Japan showcases antique beer-making equipment, posters and bottles. After your tour, fork out ¥1000 (S$15.18) to sample five different types of beers - each beer costs ¥200 - at the tasting lounge. Leave some space in your tummy to try all of Hokkaido's "greatest food" at the attached Sapporo Beer Garden. The 100-minute buffet feast includes fresh sashimi and grilled meats for ¥4,500. Burp.
Touring Hokudai Shokubutsuen Botanic Gardens: S$0
You'll probably be too full to move, but this is the perfect place to meander around on a lazy afternoon. Entrance is free to view more than 5,000 different types of Hokkaido's plant varieties. You can also learn more about Japanese aboriginal people, the Ainu, in the small Ainu museum located near the main gate of the garden.
Supper at Ramen Alley: S$16.64
Sapporo's colourful Susukino district is where the infamous ramen alley is located. Pokey in-the-walls ramen stores line both sides of the road and are opened till the wee hours, serving Hokkaido's famous miso-based broth ramen. One of the most popular is Aji No Karyu (www.ajino-karyu.com) where Anthony Bourdain sought out this pleasure potion. A bowl of the house specialty and a plate gzoya will set you back a mere ¥1,100.
